Step 1: Clean the Jar

This is a very important step. You need to ensure the jar is clean and free of dirt, bacteria, or contaminants that might affect the sprouting of your mung beans. In worse cases, your mung beans might even rot if you use a dirty jar.

What you need to do is to clean the jar thoroughly with soap and running water. Then, pat it dry with a clean paper towel and leave to air dry for a few minutes.

Step 2: Wash the Mung Beans

While waiting for the jar to dry, wash the mung beans. Place them in a large bowl, position under the faucet, then wash with running water until the water turns clear.

Step 3: Submerge the Mung Beans in Water

Submerge the mung beans in the clean jar filled with water for about two hours until the skin starts to break. You should see the roots starting to peek.

Step 5: Wait for the Roots to Sprout

On the first day, the roots should start breaking through the skin. After another day, the mung beans should start looking more like sprouts than beans.

Then on the last day, the mung bean sprouts are ready for cooking. If you feel the sprouts are too short, you can wait another day for the roots to grow about an inch longer.

While waiting for the beans to sprout, run water through the mesh and drain to mix and reposition the beans back in their place. Do this twice every day. This is the best way how to clean bean sprouts.
