Skin nhatroso.com is a disease in which malignant (nhatroso.com) cells size in the tissues of the skin.

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It protects against heat, sunlight, injury, & infection. Skin also helps control body toàn thân temperature và stores water, fat, & vitamin D. The skin has several layers, but the two main layers are the epidermis (upper or outer layer) and the dermis (lower or inner layer). Skin nhatroso.com begins in the epidermis, which is made up of three kinds of cells:

Skin nhatroso.com can occur anywhere on the body, but it is most common in skin that is often exposed lớn sunlight, such as the face, neck, & hands.

Different types of nhatroso.com start in the skin.

Skin nhatroso.com may khung in basal cells or squamous cells. Basal cell carcinoma và squamous cell carcinoma are the most common types of skin nhatroso.com. They are also called nonmelanoma skin nhatroso.com. Actinic keratosis is a skin condition that sometimes becomes squamous cell carcinoma.

Melanoma is less common than basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma. It is more likely khổng lồ invade nearby tissues and spread khổng lồ other parts of the body.

This summary is about basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, & actinic keratosis. See the following PDQ summaries for information on melanoma và other kinds of nhatroso.com that affect the skin:

Skin màu sắc and being exposed lớn sunlight can increase the risk of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

Anything that increases your chance of getting a disease is called a risk factor. Having a risk factor does not mean that you will get nhatroso.com; not having risk factors doesn’t mean that you will not get nhatroso.com. Talk with your doctor if you think you may be at risk.

Risk factors for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin include the following:

Being exposed to natural sunlight or artificial sunlight (such as from tanning beds) over long periods of time.Having a fair complexion, which includes the following:
Fair skin that freckles và burns easily, does not tan, or tans poorly. Blue, green, or other light-colored eyes.Red or blond hair.

Although having a fair complexion is a risk factor for skin nhatroso.com, people of all skin colors can get skin nhatroso.com.

Older age is the main risk factor for most nhatroso.coms. The chance of getting nhatroso.com increases as you get older.

Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, & actinic keratosis often appear as a change in the skin.

Not all changes in the skin are a sign of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, or actinic keratosis. Check with your doctor if you notice any changes in your skin.

Signs of basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin include the following:

A sore that does not heal.Areas of the skin that are:
Raised, smooth, shiny, & look pearly. Firm và look like a scar, & may be white, yellow, or waxy.Raised and red or reddish-brown.Scaly, bleeding, or crusty.

Basal cell carcinoma và squamous cell carcinoma of the skin occur most often in areas of the skin exposed khổng lồ the sun, such as the nose, ears, lower lip, or đứng top of the hands.

Signs of actinic keratosis include the following:

A rough, red, pink, or brown, scaly patch on the skin that may be flat or raised.

Actinic keratosis occurs most commonly on the face or the top of the hands.

Tests or procedures that examine the skin are used to lớn diagnose basal cell carcinoma và squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

The following procedures may be used:

Skin biopsy: All or part of the abnormal-looking growth is cut from the skin và viewed under a microscope by a pathologist to kiểm tra for signs of nhatroso.com. There are four main types of skin biopsies:

Certain factors affect prognosis (chance of recovery) & treatment options.

The prognosis for squamous cell carcinoma of the skin depends mostly on the following:

The patient"s general health.

Treatment options for basal cell carcinoma & squamous cell carcinoma of the skin depend on the following:

The type of nhatroso.com.The stage of the nhatroso.com, for squamous cell carcinoma. The patient’s general health.

After squamous cell nhatroso.com of the skin has been diagnosed, tests are done khổng lồ find out if nhatroso.com cells have spread within the skin or to other parts of the body.

The process used to lớn find out if nhatroso.com has spread within the skin or to lớn other parts of the body toàn thân is called staging. The information gathered from the staging process determines the stage of the disease. It is important lớn know the stage in order to lớn plan treatment for squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

Basal cell carcinoma of the skin rarely spreads lớn other parts of the body. Staging tests to kiểm tra whether basal cell carcinoma of the skin has spread are usually not needed.

The following tests & procedures may be used in the staging process for squamous cell carcinoma of the skin:

There are three ways that nhatroso.com spreads in the body.

nhatroso.com can spread through tissue, the lymph system, & the blood:

Tissue. The nhatroso.com spreads from where it began by growing into nearby areas.

nhatroso.com may spread from where it began to lớn other parts of the body.

When nhatroso.com spreads to another part of the body, it is called metastasis. nhatroso.com cells break away from where they began (the primary tumor) và travel through the lymph system or blood.

Blood. The nhatroso.com gets into the blood, travels through the blood vessels, và forms a tumor (metastatic tumor) in another part of the body.

The metastatic tumor is the same type of nhatroso.com as the primary tumor. For example, if skin nhatroso.com spreads lớn the lung, the nhatroso.com cells in the lung are actually skin nhatroso.com cells. The disease is metastatic skin nhatroso.com, not lung nhatroso.com.

Many nhatroso.com deaths are caused when nhatroso.com moves from the original tumor and spreads lớn other tissues & organs. This is called metastatic nhatroso.com. This animation shows how nhatroso.com cells travel from the place in the body where they first formed to lớn other parts of the body.

Staging for basal cell carcinoma & squamous cell carcinoma of the skin depends on where the nhatroso.com formed.

Staging for basal cell carcinoma và squamous cell carcinoma of the eyelid is different from staging for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma found on other areas of the head or neck. There is no staging system for basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma that is not found on the head or neck.

Surgery khổng lồ remove the primary tumor and abnormal lymph nodes is done so that tissue samples can be studied under a microscope. This is called pathologic staging and the findings are used for staging as described below. If staging is done before surgery khổng lồ remove the tumor, it is called clinical staging. The clinical stage may be different from the pathologic stage.

The following stages are used for basal cell carcinoma và squamous cell carcinoma of the skin that is on the head or neck but not on the eyelid:

The following stages are used for basal cell carcinoma & squamous cell carcinoma of the skin on the eyelid:

Stage 0 (Carcinoma in situ)

In stage 0, abnormal cells are found in the epidermis, usually in the basal cell layer. These abnormal cells may become nhatroso.com và spread into nearby normal tissue. Stage 0 is also called carcinoma in situ.

Stage I

In stage I, nhatroso.com has formed. Stage I is divided into stages IA & IB.

Stage IB: The tumor is larger than 10 millimeters but not larger than đôi mươi millimeters & the tumor has not spread to lớn the edge of the eyelid where the lashes are, or lớn the connective tissue in the eyelid.
the tumor is larger than 20 millimeters but not larger than 30 millimeters and may have spread lớn the edge of the eyelid where the lashes are, to the connective tissue in the eyelid, or to the full thickness of the eyelid.
Stage IIIB: The tumor may be any form size and may have spread lớn the edge of the eyelid where the lashes are, lớn the connective tissue in the eyelid, or to lớn the full thickness of the eyelid, or to the eye, eye socket, sinuses, tear ducts, or brain, or to the tissues that tư vấn the eye. nhatroso.com has spread khổng lồ lymph nodes as follows:

Basal cell carcinoma. A skin nhatroso.com lesion that looks reddish brown và slightly raised (left panel) và a skin nhatroso.com lesion that looks like an open sore with a pearly rim (right panel).

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin nhatroso.com. It usually occurs on areas of the skin that have been in the sun, most often the nose. Often this nhatroso.com appears as a raised bump that looks smooth and pearly. A less common type looks like a scar or it is flat và firm & may be skin-colored, yellow, or waxy. Basal cell carcinoma may spread lớn tissues around the nhatroso.com, but it usually does not spread khổng lồ other parts of the body.

Squamous cell carcinoma occurs on areas of the skin that have been damaged by the sun, such as the ears, lower lip, và the back of the hands. Squamous cell carcinoma may also appear on areas of the skin that have been sunburned or exposed lớn chemicals or radiation. Often this nhatroso.com looks lượt thích a firm red bump. The tumor may feel scaly, bleed, or form a crust. Squamous cell tumors may spread lớn nearby lymph nodes. Squamous cell carcinoma that has not spread can usually be cured.

Actinic keratosis

Actinic keratosis is a skin condition that is not nhatroso.com, but sometimes changes into squamous cell carcinoma. One or more lesions may occur in areas that have been exposed lớn the sun, such as the face, the back of the hands, và the lower lip. It looks like rough, red, pink, or brown scaly patches on the skin that may be flat or raised, or as a cracked & peeling lower lip that is not helped by lip balm or petroleum jelly. Actinic keratosis may disappear without treatment.

There are different types of treatment for patients with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, and actinic keratosis. There are different types of treatment for patients with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, & actinic keratosis.

Different types of treatment are available for patients with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, & actinic keratosis. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), & some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant lớn help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with nhatroso.com. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to lớn think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are mở cửa only lớn patients who have not started treatment.

Eight types of standard treatment are used:

Surgery

One or more of the following surgical procedures may be used to treat basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, or actinic keratosis:

Simple excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, curettage & electrodesiccation, và cryosurgery are used to lớn treat basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. Tia laze surgery is rarely used lớn treat basal cell carcinoma. Simple excision, shave excision, curettage và desiccation, dermabrasion, and laser surgery are used lớn treat actinic keratosis.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy is a nhatroso.com treatment that uses high-energy x-rays or other types of radiation to lớn kill nhatroso.com cells or keep them from growing. External radiation therapy uses a machine outside the body to send radiation toward the area of the body toàn thân with nhatroso.com.

External radiation therapy is used lớn treat basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma of the skin.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy is a nhatroso.com treatment that uses drugs lớn stop the growth of nhatroso.com cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing.

Chemotherapy for basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, & actinic keratosis is usually topical (applied khổng lồ the skin in a cream or lotion). Topical fluorouracil (5-FU) is used to lớn treat basal cell carcinoma.

See Drugs Approved for Basal Cell Carcinoma for more information.

Photodynamic therapy

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a nhatroso.com treatment that uses a drug and a certain type of light to kill nhatroso.com cells. A drug that is not active until it is exposed to light is injected into a vein or put on the skin. The drug collects more in nhatroso.com cells than in normal cells. For skin nhatroso.com, laser light is shined onto the skin & the drug becomes active & kills the nhatroso.com cells. Photodynamic therapy causes little damage khổng lồ healthy tissue.

Photodynamic therapy is also used lớn treat actinic keratoses.

Immunotherapy

Immunotherapy is a treatment that uses the patient’s immune system khổng lồ fight nhatroso.com. Substances made by the body or made in a laboratory are used to boost, direct, or restore the body’s natural defenses against nhatroso.com. This nhatroso.com treatment is a type of biologic therapy.

There are different types of immunotherapy used to treat skin nhatroso.com:

Immune checkpoint inhibitors block proteins called checkpoints that are made by some types of immune system cells, such as T cells, & some nhatroso.com cells. PD-1 is a protein on the surface of T cells that helps keep the body’s immune responses in check. PD-L1 is a protein found on some types of nhatroso.com cells. When PD-1 attaches to PD-L1, it stops the T cell from killing the nhatroso.com cell. PD-1 and PD-L1 inhibitors keep PD-1 và PD-L1 proteins from attaching to each other. This allows the T cells to lớn kill nhatroso.com cells.

Immunotherapy uses the body’s immune system to fight nhatroso.com. This animation explains one type of immunotherapy that uses immune checkpoint inhibitors khổng lồ treat nhatroso.com.

See Drugs Approved for Basal Cell Carcinoma for more information.

Chemical peel

A chemical peel is a procedure used to lớn improve the way certain skin conditions look. A chemical solution is put on the skin to lớn dissolve the đứng đầu layers of skin cells. Chemical peels may be used to treat actinic keratosis. This type of treatment is also called chemabrasion and chemexfoliation.

Other drug therapy

Retinoids (drugs related lớn vitamin A) are sometimes used khổng lồ treat squamous cell carcinoma of the skin. Diclofenac and ingenol are topical drugs used lớn treat actinic keratosis.

New types of treatment are being tested in clinical trials.

Information about clinical trials is available from the NCI website.

Treatment for skin nhatroso.com may cause side effects.

For information about side effects caused by treatment for nhatroso.com, see our Side Effects page.

Patients may want khổng lồ think about taking part in a clinical trial.

For some patients, taking part in a clinical trial may be the best treatment choice. Clinical trials are part of the nhatroso.com research process. Clinical trials are done to find out if new nhatroso.com treatments are safe và effective or better than the standard treatment.

Many of today"s standard treatments for nhatroso.com are based on earlier clinical trials. Patients who take part in a clinical trial may receive the standard treatment or be among the first to receive a new treatment.

Patients who take part in clinical trials also help improve the way nhatroso.com will be treated in the future. Even when clinical trials vì chưng not lead khổng lồ effective new treatments, they often answer important questions and help move research forward.

Patients can enter clinical trials before, during, or after starting their nhatroso.com treatment.

Some clinical trials only include patients who have not yet received treatment. Other trials chạy thử treatments for patients whose nhatroso.com has not gotten better. There are also clinical trials that kiểm tra new ways khổng lồ stop nhatroso.com from recurring (coming back) or reduce the side effects of nhatroso.com treatment.

Clinical trials are taking place in many parts of the country. Information about clinical trials supported by NCI can be found on NCI’s clinical trials tìm kiếm webpage. Clinical trials supported by other organizations can be found on the ClinicalTrials.gov website.

Follow-up tests may be needed.

Some of the tests that were done khổng lồ diagnose the nhatroso.com or lớn find out the stage of the nhatroso.com may be repeated. Some tests will be repeated in order to see how well the treatment is working. Decisions about whether to continue, change, or stop treatment may be based on the results of these tests.

Some of the tests will continue to be done from time lớn time after treatment has ended. The results of these tests can show if your condition has changed or if the nhatroso.com has recurred (come back). These tests are sometimes called follow-up tests or check-ups.

If basal cell carcinoma và squamous cell carcinoma recur (come back), it is usually within 5 years of initial treatment. Talk to your doctor about how often you should have your skin checked for signs of nhatroso.com.
